In the 23rd century, the elite fighter pilots of the Earth Defense Force practice their skills against drones, stationary targets, and (out of boredom) each other. It’s been decades since the last actual war and almost as long since the EDF has seen anything but small pirates. People have begun to question the need for such a large navy.
“A few small ships should be more than enough for search-and-rescue operations. It’s time to mothball the EDF. Humanity is united and alone in the Galaxy! There’ll never be another war!”
Yeah, we can all see where this is going, can’t we? Take a look at the title of this game again.
Mood
It’s Top Gun in space! Think about Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica or (for the older writers) Space: Above and Beyond. That is, the mood is space action-adventure with zippy little fighters, and I certainly wouldn’t say no to a romance subplot. :)
Setting notes
Technology: roughly halfway between The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica. Lasers, slug guns and missiles are the weapons of choice. Artificial gravity works but only on really big ships. Faster-than-light travel also works but is extremely dangerous without very specific precautions. AI is about as smart as the average jellyfish.
The Universe: A century of exploration has found many solar systems with habitable planets, but no intelligent life at all. Scientists now believe that intelligence, rather than inevitable, is incredibly rare in the universe - perhaps even nonexistent outside of humanity. Speaking of whom, 99% of humanity still live on Earth, but millions live on Mars or in various space stations and colonies.

SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED (we have one player finishing up a character, but we can’t look at any new characters. I’m sorry)
Apply to join the game by submitting a character, including a character portrait (and a cool callsign!).This game is friendly to newcomers, and variant character concepts are welcome. I’ve helped a number of people learn how to play Storium games, and am always happy to answer questions or give (hopefully) helpful tips.
Posting:
Please write in third-person past tense. Card art for any new cards you play is appreciated, but not mandatory. To avoid “one-liners”, I’m going to ask for a minimum of 2-3 sentences per entry (around 50 words), but of course you can write more.
If you are absent for more than 7 days without notice, I reserve the right to temporarily retire your character and move the game on.
On card-play: Unless otherwise specified, all challenges are designed for each player to play one card as part of their move. Please don’t play a second or third card unless I ask you to, or the challenge specifically mentions it.
Special Rules:
Conditions: I use Goal cards to simulate long-running conditions (ie Starving, Wounded, Delirious) that will last over more than one challenge. Ie, if you got shot, you might be given three copies of a “Wounded” goal card.
If you play one of these “condition” cards, that means you are not playing a Strength card, so you are increasing the risk of a Weak result (or an Uncertain result that I could finish as Weak). You also have to describe how that condition affects the challenge.
The compensation for that bad stuff is that you get a Wild Strength card (as per Storium rules) when you have played a condition out. If you refuse to play any conditions, and just keep them in your hand until the game is over, they don’t have any actual effect, but in my epilog (I always write an epilog), I will describe your character’s death and/or embarrassing retirement, so there’s that. :)
Info for invitees and applicants: none specified
This game is set in the same universe as my “Last Fleet” game, but roughly 400 years earlier. There’s no need to read that game to understand this one, though - it’s a completely different setup. A few Easter eggs, but nothing important.
Note: Although there will be a mix of planetside and spaceside adventures, your PCs are all fighter pilots.
Name: as per any standard human name
Rank: Lieutenant, if your concept is a younger or newer pilot, Captain if your concept is older or more mature. (and, of course, Air Sergeant if your concept is someone who is a total hooligan)
Callsign: something cool, like Maverick, Phoenix, Athena, etc. In real life, callsigns can also be unflattering nicknames (Goose, Shorty), but feel free to avoid that if you want.
